I think I’ve seen a movie each weekend since Christmas. This weekend I saw “The Duchess” starring Keira Knightley. The movie is a so-so at best and I ended up playing Desktop Tower Defense towards the end. Here’s how it ranks on my winter movie board:
Hmmm. I guess the movie can’t be that good if it’s ranked below “Step Brothers” huh? There are a lot of good movies out right now that I still want to see (“Revolutionary Road”, “Gran Torino”, and “Frost/Nixon” to be specific), but I feel like I’ve seen too many serious movies lately. I think an order of “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” is needed to restore the balance.
Happy Chinese New Year!
I don’t know why I’m staying up so late to blog, but here goes:
I’m pretty sure I went through youth group and undergrad with blinders on and perceived my leaders and pastors to be near perfect (with the exception of their sense of humor). So when it was my turn to be a leader, I guess I put on a facade and tried to appear more perfect than I actually was/am. For this, I have to apologize because I probably made someone feel more depressed by making the Christian life seem easier than it is. I know what it feels like to fail at something that’s supposed to be easy and it really really sucks. I’ve heard this lesson many times and only now do I see the importance of keepin’ it real fake.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how we can use the laws of the universe for our personal gain. It’s simple right? On one level, you have all your sciences – the natural laws of the universe govern how things fall, grow, move, change, and interact with each other. If you know more about science, then you can manipulate it and give birth to new technologies, drugs, and so on.
Then on another level you have God’s rules and commands (e.g. live set apart lives, have a humble heart, fight the flesh, give to the needy, be a faithful worker, pray, fast, etc.) Knowing and following these rules will get you right with God and put you on the fast track to Heaven. But isn’t that what every other religion is like? Do this, do that, don’t do this, don’t even think about that. What makes my life different than my Buddhist or Hindu neighbors?
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…
- John 1:12
This is why people keep saying that Christianity is not a religion, but a relationship with God. The relationship aspect is crucial. The reason behind our obedience isn’t just “This is the way to Heaven”. Nor is it “If I do this for You, You will do something for me.” That kind of thinking will only lead to the frustrated life of the elder brother, who did everything right, but did it all for himself.
But because of our relationship with God, we can do it out of love. If we obey out of love, then all the cost and inconvenience of following these rules falls into the realm of worship, doesn’t it?
Just thought I’d post this for you guys: How to beat anyone at Rock-Paper-Scissors. See, there IS skill involved. Tournament anyone?
